Absorbable sutures are classified into catgut sutures, chemically synthesized sutures (PGA), and pure natural collagen sutures based on material and absorption rate.
1. Catgut: Manufactured from healthy animal goat intestines containing collagen. Medical catgut is available in ordinary and chrome varieties. Absorption time typically ranges from 6 to 20 days, depending on tissue conditions and gut thickness. Single-use sterile packaging ensures safety.
2. Chemical Synthesis (PGA, PGLA, PLA): Polymer linear materials created through advanced chemical technology. These are generally absorbed stably within 60-90 days.
These sutures cannot be absorbed by tissue and must be removed post-recovery. Removal timing depends on the wound location and the patient's specific healing condition.
